News - Guided By His Hand

January 2017

Dear friends,

Happy New Year! Thanks so much for your continued prayers for the Mengen church. These have been exciting days as God’s Word continues to go forth amongst the people of Papua New Guinea. Starting with our home village, we have seen the gospel go out in several other Mengen communities, with many people turning from spiritual darkness and into the light of Christ.

We started out with 2 Mengen missionary families who have faithfully taught and discipled believers in our first outreach village. Both families have endured persecution, exhaustion and life-threatening illnesses. Because of the faithfulness of Bruce and Kamilus and their wives, we have seen a strong and thriving church planted in B. village.

Several months ago, another Mengen family joined the missionary team. Vincent and Manuela came to relieve some of the pressure from Bruce and Kamilus and have plunged right into teaching Bible lessons and doing literacy. A huge task for this very young couple. They have also been a help in the next outreach and we thank the Lord for their faithfulness.

In October, Edward and Francesca became the 4th Mengen missionary family to leave their home and travel to a distant location.

Their story is also special in so many ways.

Two years ago, Edward went to visit a village some distance away. One of the men from there had heard some Bible teaching from the first outreach. He was excited and anxious for his own family to be able to hear. He said to Edward, “Look over there—that’s my wife. Look over there—those are my kids and that’s my family over there. If they die and go to the place of fire, whose fault it? It’s your fault because you heard the Good News 10 years ago and haven’t come and told us yet.”

Because Edward has been the main Bible teacher in our home village, it took some time before he was freed up and able to go. However, the first of October, he and Francesca and their 3 young children moved to S. village to begin their new ministry. As soon as they arrived, people came and wanted them to start teaching that same night! So a couple of days later, Edward began to teach and taught 7 days a week for 13 weeks! Absolutely incredible! Even his little daughters got in on the action, helping to explain the Bible story posters casually to different people!!

The Bible teaching culminated on Christmas Day and in the end, 34 people placed their trust in Christ. Several others have heard the teaching and need a bit more review, but the Lord is certainly at work in their hearts. Throughout this time Edward continually had people waking him up early each morning, wanting to talk about the Lord! The villagers provided food each day for Francesca so that she would not have to plant a garden. That kind of thing is nearly unheard of in this culture, as people always want payment for their “free gifts."

Now another group of at least 30 people are anxious to hear the Bible teaching. Edward will soon be starting back at the first lesson and teaching a whole new group. At the same time, he’ll be going through Acts with the new believers and grounding them in their faith. An incredible and exhausting schedule, to say the least. Thanks so much for your prayers for them and the rest of the Mengen missionaries as they serve the Lord.

A Quick Health Update while I’m still here in Canada!

As for me, I am doing pretty well health-wise. In a couple of weeks I’ll be having another MRI. The neurologist will compare this one with the one I had in Brisbane. If there are any changes, I’m guessing he’ll start me on MS medicine. However, if there are no changes on the scan, then there is a chance that I’ll be able to return to PNG for awhile. I’m hoping and praying that this will happen as I have a LOT of translation work ready to go.

Please pray that a cancellation would come up for me to have the MRI at the hospital. If I have to go to a private clinic, then it is going to cost quite a bit. I don’t mind the cost if it means that the Mengen New Testament will be completed 6 months earlier. However, I’d love to be able to have the MRI done for free at the hospital, so pray with me that I’d be able to get in during the next 2 weeks!!

I’m excited to report that I have just 3 New Testament books left to draft out (1-2 Peter and Hebrews). This is the first step in the process, but I really am thrilled to see light at the end of the tunnel. Lord willing, the Mengen New Testament will be completed this year (if I can just get back there to do the work!!!).

Thanks for your faithful prayers and financial support. I really appreciate each and every one of you. What a blessing you have been throughout my 17 years in Papua New Guinea.

Because He lives,

Becky Preheim

Quick update, January 11, 2017

Dear Friends,

Thanks so much for your prayers. The Lord has really answered!! Today I got a call into the hospital to get an MRI. I was on a cancellation list, but never thought I’d actually get called in. The Lord answered prayers and I was able to have the MRI done in the hospital this afternoon instead of having to go to a private clinic. Yeah!!

On Monday, I’m going to call my neurologist and see if I can get in there a bit earlier too!!! I have an appointment for January 30, but am very anxious to hear what he’s going to say, so it would be nice to get in sooner rather than later. Once he sees this new MRI and looks over my other test results, then he’ll decide if he’s going to start me on medicine for Multiple Sclerosis or if he’s going to let me go back to PNG for now. There is a good possibility that he’ll tell me to come back in 6-12 months for a follow-up visit.

I’m excited and anxious to get back to PNG and continue working on Bible translation. I have 2200 verses ready to go (most of those being Matthew and John!!) Can’t wait to sit down with my Mengen friends and continue on the translation process.

Thanks again for your prayers for me.
